A July 2004 hunt....

A July 2004 hunt.......

My good friend Chris and I finally got together for a evening hunt of some groundhogs at a new place my nephew acquired permission. He promised some long range shots, just what I was looking for! Shots were possible out to a 1000 yds......hot dang! Well it was a hot, muggy afternoon here in Virginia. The flies were thick as we were set up in a cow pasture full of cow doo! We set up under the only little tree and started glassing. Up popped number one at 349 yards and Chris nailed him with his Rampro 6 mm br using 70 gr. B. Tips. Evidently he just nipped him as he made it in the hole. On inspection later, we found a nice red stripe leading into the hole, guess we can count that one as he was way down deep, to far to reach.

Well the next one was spotted at 490 yards so Chris drew a bead on him after clicking up the desired elevation and was resounded with a beautiful pop right thru the boiler room! He was grave yard dead as he gave the surrender flag, no looking for him!

Next it was my turn on a hog that was easing out of the hole at 360 yards. He would not stand up! So I drew bead with my Nesika 6mm br using 75 gr. Vmax's. I touched the 1.5 oz Jewel trigger and BAM, saw the bullet hit way low after I had clicked up! Dang.....a miss! Well I was mystified to say the least! The hog had gone back in so I thought for a minute trying to figger out what was wrong. Then it dawned on me that I had shot at a hog the other day that required me to crank 12 moa on him. Evidently I had cranked back to zero the wrong way! So I recranked back to where zero was supposed to be, then went up for this shot which was 1.5 moa. Well after a little waiting here he come, slowly sliding his nose, then his head out of the hole. I waited for the whole body to slide out before I touched the Jewel. PLUNK was the wonderful sound of the Vmax making contact! It made mush out his head, one eyeball was hanging out, looked like a sledgehammer hit him!! Big ole pig ... about 12-15 lbs! I got another one at 308 yards as he was looking the other way. Terry, my nephew tried one at 340, thought he was a hit but never found him.

We saw a few more hogs but never tried them as it was getting late. We did make references as to their locations for next time. We gathered up the carcasses for disposal because the owner wanted them gone. We normally leave 'em for the buzzards eat and other hungry varmints, but you do what the owner says or you don't come back!
