Varmints For Fun

Chris in PA sent these pics of his first kills in 2005. Nice spring hogs!

Thanks Chris!

AL Boyechko in Canada sent these pics of yote he shot with his 20 PPC and 33 gr. Vmax.

At left are bullet tests using different 20 cal. bullets and wet phone books.

[Al wrote:]
[I did some pleminary bullet expansion testing in the 20PPC (tests to be
re-done)
All bullets were shot at 100 yds. into fresh (unshot) phone books that were

soaked in water for about an hour.
33Vmax @ 4222 fps penetrated 3-1/2"
40Vmax @ 4000 fps penetrated 5-1/2"
Berger 30gr & 35 gr both penetrated through 7" of phone book and kept going

(need to be redone) They were well over 4200 fps
I want to retest the Bergers and include the plastic tipped 39 Sierra
These tests were done 2 months ago...and have shown just how soft and
explosive the VMax's really are especially when compared to the Berger
product.
I've been gathering more phone books and intend to complete and re-do this
bullet test.]

The hog slaying .270 Remington.

What's left of the hog's head.

I was fortunate enough to have been on leave for the first half of June.  Myself and my younger brother Todd went hog hunting a few times.  I do have a picture of one hog he killed at 111 yards with his Remington model 700 .270.  He has a Leupold 3-9x40 scope mounted on his .270.  He was using 130grain Nosler ballistic tip bullets.

Adam Sanderson sent these hunting pics from Pennsylvania. Adam is serving our country now and doesn't have time to do much hunting........thanks Adam!

Picture of me and Osama Bin Diggin' --- that's him on the right with the turban!

The rifle in question is a Savage 110 in .22-250.  Other than a very necessary trigger job its pretty stock.  A lot of people don't like Savage rifles but I do and I've never had a hog complain about getting tapped with this one.  The Savage is capped with a BSA 4X16 AO scope.  Again, a lot of people, hog shooters in particular, wouldn't even think about a BSA scope but it works and it holds zero.  Harris bipod, and it weighs 10.8 pounds. I might have mentioned we've got a kid in college so that sort of limits my choices of artillery and accessories.
I shoot a handload of course.  Winchester brass, full length resized case, Federal primer, 34 grains of IMR 4895 pushing a 55gr Nosler ballistic tip at about 3500 fps.  Fairly flat, hits like a Mack truck, and it doesn't burn the tube like hotter loads would.  I have recently broken a 9 hog streak.  I was 9 for 9 and then I had to hit one twice. Must be losin' it in my old age.
