Wind
Frank Grunseich
How do you think wind affects the chucks? I had the greatest day of my life
last year on a windy (15mph) day. Constant sightings and action! I thought
it might be the secret, in that it wakes them up and aerates the burrows,
but next time when circumstances were the same, the action was marginal.
What do you think about the affects of wind? What about rain after a hot
morning? Will they be out during or after the rain or both? THANKS, FRANK
My response....
Frank,
From what I've seen over the years is hogs will come out during windy conditons
but very sparingly in the open. Now if the den is in a protected area such as
valleys with trees surrounding the holes they will be out more. But then you
have the dumb one that will poke his head out but he will be very skittish.
Now after a shower on a hot summer day....it's the best time to be there! Just
the other day I was out checking a field when I locked on a pig. The wind was
blowing and a storm was fast approching. By the time I got the rifle up and
loaded it was puring down and that pig just kept on eating! He finally went into
the fence row. Well I didn't want my rifle wet or me so he got a pass. Well the
storm passed after about 15 minutes. Then 20 minutes later here he comes, flying
out of the fence row, stood up to survey the territory. Five seconds later a 50
gr. Berger from my 20 ppc entered his neck at 487 yards. I even got to see the
mist fly off him when the bullet entered! One hole digger grave yard dead!
The thing is you really don't know when they will pop out of the hole.....just
be there when he does!
